The National Theater signed a contract with the winner of the tender to reconstruct the State Opera

On Friday the Office for the Protection of Economic Competition has turned down the motion to apply a preliminary measure, which has been filed by the unsuccessful bidders – companies Metrostav a. s., PRŮMSTAV, a. s., PSJ, a. s. and GEOSAN GROUP a. s.

The National Theater will hand over the site to HOCHTIEF CZ in the upcoming days so that the reconstruction can start without delays. “I’m happy that we are starting with the reconstruction at a time, when the continued operation of the State Opera body is ensured at another theater facility in the district of Karlín and partly in the National Theater. Our decision to prepare everything for the reconstruction in advance has proven as correct. We are looking forward to the reconstructed building and we are already thinking about the program,” said the director of the National Theater prof. MgA. Jan Burian.

HOCHTIEF CZ a. s. won the tender with the lowest bid of 857,6 mil. CZK. The Chairman of the Executive Board Ing. Tomáš Bílek stated: „The last reconstruction of the State Opera took place in 1970s and the current condition of the building and its furnishing reflects this. We have a big challenge ahead of us, on which we will utilize our vast experience in reconstructions of historic and protected buildings”. In the past the company reconstructed the National Monument on Prague’s Vítkov Hill, the Broumov Monastery or the baroque hospital Kuks, which was awarded with the last year’s prize as the Construction of the Year.

The financing of the reconstruction of the State Opera is ensured from program Care for National Cultural Treasures, which is used to cover repairs or construction of important cultural institutions such as the Depository of the National Library, reconstruction of the Clementinum Library or reconstruction of the National Museum.

The repair of the State Opera building will last 27 months.
